And Now, The News...

Another unpatched security flaw in Internet Explorer 6

Dawn Kawamoto, CNET News.com, reported on ZDNet News, July 1, that Microsoft announced the presence of yet another security hole in Internet Explorer 6, affecting Windows 2000, Service Packs 1, 3 and 4, and Windows XP, Service Packs 1 and 2. Users are advised to set their Internet Security Zone settings to "High" before running any ActiveX Controls. Since most users on the planet have no idea what that means, nor how to make such settings, we can guess that we will soon be busy resolving related problems for our users, clients, etc.

Microsoft to release Disk-based Backup Software

On July 8, Ed Frauenheim, of CNET News.com, reported on ZDNet News that Microsoft is releasing System Center Data Protection Manager to its manufacturing division within thirty days, apparently an operating system designed for disk-based backup utilizing NAS (Network-Attached Storage). The product is designed to compete with similar products costing many times more, while costing only about $5000 per 1 TB of storage. DPM (Data Protection Manager) works at the byte-level, and should enable end-users to recover their files directly, without tech-support.

McAfee Reports Computer Hijacking is Increasing

Alorie Gilbert, of CNET News.com, reported on ZDNet News: July 11, 2005, that McAfee has released a report that over the past three months, the number of incidents of computers running "zombie code," aka "bot code," has increased by 12 %, four times the number of incidents during the prior quarter. Zombie code creates networks of linked systems that can distribute spam, steal financial data, or hold systems and networks hostage. Zombie code usually runs, completely undetected by the owner. This malware code is most often spread using chat room servers or file-sharing networks.

ExaGrid Grid Computing Presentation Overview

ExaGrid Systems' presentation explained how a "Grid Computing" approach is used in its Advanstor™ "Business Continuity Focused" storage solution. The solution scales by adding storage capacity and compute power for included HSM, Delta Compression and Replication functionality in a "Grid Enabled" matrix.

ExaGrid Systems Advanstor™ capability eliminates common Business Continuity Process and Storage Management issues including:
  • Traditional backup/restore processes are time-consuming, costly, complex and error-prone
  • Restoration of lost or deleted files takes hours
  • Backups frequently fail preventing data from being restored at all
  • Backup and archive tapes become lost or unreadable over time
  • Site disaster recovery involves tape-based restoration processes which can create days, and even weeks of downtime, which in many cases leads to corporate collapse
  • Primary storage management still requires complex, manual file system management each time a file system fills up

The solution to these problems is Advanstor™. It eliminates tape-based backups and continually-shrinking backup windows. Advanstor™ significantly reduces the time it takes to restore lost files and to recover from system and site disasters. It also greatly simplifies the operational issues around continually expanding primary storage capacity to meet user demand.

Advanstor™ provides high performance NAS storage, complete on-site and off-site incremental-only disk-based backups, and fast site disaster recovery. Its innovative grid-based architecture makes the entire system self-discovering, self-protecting and self-healing.

Advanstor™ integrates both storage and protection into one, simple to use, automated product including a remote site repository as part of the all inclusive solution.

>Submissions: If you any ideas for an article that you might like to write for this Newsletter, or about any third-party software that you would like to share with our members, please submit your article to the Editor, contact information below. Please use the Rich Text Format (.rtf file) for your article, and in the subject line of your email, put the word, Newsletter, so I don't accidently delete your email.
