And Now, The News...

Microsoft Announces Mobile 5 Handheld OS for Cell Phones

Ina Fried, of ZDNet, reported on May 10 that Mr. Gates has announced the release of Mobile 5, an operating system specifically tailored to cell phones. When asked whether Microsoft was slow in getting into the cell phone market, Bill said, "If you take the handheld space, I wouldn't say we were slow there. It depends on if you have this expectation that we always get some gigantic market share overnight. We don't really have that expectation of ourselves except over a very long period of time." The new OS will, of course, focus on email and web access. To read the full story,

Personnel Data Lost for 600,000 Time Warner Employees!

Dawn Kawamoto, of CNET News.com, reported on May 2, that while transporting Time-Warner's backup data tapes to an Iron Mountain storage facility, tapes holding the personnel data for more than 600,000 present and former employees was lost. Time Warner has set up an 800 number for current and former employees to answer their questions, and will offer free credit monitoring for one year. Does this mean you need to send armed Net Admins with your backup tapes to offsite storage facilities? Get the full story,

Don't give your browser the finger...er...the "fat finger", or you might end up in the WRONG PLACE!

Russian hackers came up with a real nasty one this time: Googkle. Did I misspell something? No, you see, the "K" and the "L" are right next to each other on the keyboard, and if you "fat finger" the keyboard, accidentally adding a "K" when you type Google, you'll end up on a website that's specially designed to automatically infect your system with several viruses. A number of these websites are now active, some for infecting systems with viruses, and others as "phishing" sites, implanting keyloggers to steal your data. From now on, be very, vewry carefgul howe you typpe URKLs! This info from Steve's Newsletter,

At the Previous Meeting...

April's first presentation by Storage Tek,
http://www.storagetek.com was "All Data are Not Equal." Lifecycle Management (ILM) and different tiers of storage for DAS, NAS, and SAN environments.

Next, eEye Digital Security, http://www.eeye.com discussed "Vulnerabilities: The Weakest Link in Network Security". Security vulnerabilities are everywhere. In addition to the countless number software patches platform vendors push out on a daily basis, configuration errors also contribute to an organization's overall attack surface, opening up an enterprise to countless attacks. eEye Digital Security, the leaders in proactive network security, discussed the most prevalent types of vulnerabilities, how to assess your overall security posture and best practices for managing vulnerabilities across any size organization. As an added bonus, one of eEye's most heralded researcher's Barnaby Jack, demonstrated vulnerability research methods and agendas.

Final Notes…

>Suggestions: An organization is always more efficient when its members pitch in. We want suggestions for products, vendors, or technical presenters YOU would like to see at our meetings. If you have ideas for things you think we should be doing, let us know! After each meeting, Suggestion/Evaluation forms will be available. Alternatively, you may email suggestions to Brad Fischl, brad.fischl@quickstart.com, or to the Editor (see below) or you could make your suggestions on our new Online FORUM!

>Submissions: If you any ideas for an article that you might like to write for this Newsletter, or about any third-party software that you would like to share with our members, please submit your article to the Editor, contact information below. Please use the Rich Text Format (.rtf file) for your article, and in the subject line of your email, put the word, Newsletter, so I don't accidently delete your email. (I tend to delete emails from people I don't know unless the subject line clearly indicates something important.)

Sorry, I've got to hang up...my cell phone's downloading an update, and needs to reboot in ten seconds! See you at the meeting on Thursday, May 12, 200
