And Now, The News...

Microsoft™ Releases the Beta Edition of Vista (formerly coded Longhorn)

This past week, Microsoft has released the beta edition of the new premier operating system, renamed Vista. About 10,000 testers are presently sinking their eager fangs into the new OS. We shall soon hear the peans of praise, and the gnashing of teeth, as the testing process brings to light the pros and cons of the prototype. Some new features will include improved search capabilities, a more functional version of IE, and a new start menu. Of course, we expect it to take time as the OS is refined for final release, and we wait with beta-ed breath.

Changing of the Guard...

As we move boldly into the future of the SoCal IT Pro Association, brave men and women come and go. We honor and give thanks to those who graciously volunteer their time and efforts on behalf of our organization. We wish to thank those who have gone before, Darrell Kim, former Corporate Secretary, and Dick Porter, former Director of Membership, for their excellent service. We welcome as our new Corporate Secretary, the brave Michelle Edgerton, and the fearless Barnet Rawitch as our new Director of Membership. May they find the strength to survive these arduous times.

At the Previous Meeting...

Sybari Software's Doug Skinner discussed the threats that plague corporate digital assets and messaging systems administrators, who are called upon to meet the challenges that mount every week. Sybari Software protects messaging and collaboration systems from mal-ware, viruses, worms and spam. They demonstrated ways to protect the information workplace. Sybari does such an exceptional job securing the information worker from malicious code that over 10 thousand companies use it, including Microsoft. Moreover, Sybari has become the newest subsidiary of Microsoft in their quest to become a leading security software company. To find out more about Sybari Antigen, visit

Next, Tevora Business Solutions, Inc. and Network Engines gave an informative presentation entitled Securing Microsoft® Exchange Server Communications.

The objective of their presentation was to help you enable a consistent, reliable and secure messaging infrastructure. This interactive presentation will highlight a few of the security challenges organizations face with Microsoft® Exchange Server and have you walking away with advanced protection techniques as well as a prescriptive security model.

Final Notes…

>Suggestions: An organization is always more efficient when its members pitch in. We want suggestions for products, vendors, or technical presenters YOU would like to see at our meetings. If you have ideas for things you think we should be doing, let us know! After each meeting, Suggestion/Evaluation forms will be available. Alternatively, you may email suggestions to Brad Fischl, brad.fischl@quickstart.com, or to the Editor (see below) or you could make your suggestions on our new Online FORUM!

>Submissions: If you any ideas for an article that you might like to write for this Newsletter, or about any third-party software that you would like to share with our members, please submit your article to the Editor, contact information below. Please use the Rich Text Format (.rtf file) for your article, and in the subject line of your email, put the word, Newsletter, so I don't accidently delete your email. (I tend to delete emails from people I don't know unless the subject line clearly indicates something important.)

See you at the meeting on Thursday, August 11, 2005
